Special counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed election officials in Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin for communications with former President Donald Trump, his presidential campaign, and allies, the Washington Post reported.
These are the first known subpoenas sent out by Smith, who in November was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee criminal investigations involving Trump — including a probe related to the January 6 attack at the US Capitol and an inquiry into the former president's handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
The subpoenas were sent in recent days to Dane County, Wisconsin; Maricopa County, Arizona; Wayne County, Michigan; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, per the Post. All three states were at the heart of Trump's effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
