The top 5 moments of Jean Segura’s Phillies career
With the Phillies’ reported signing of star shortstop Trea Turner to a lucrative 11-year deal, the team’s middle infield appears set for the foreseeable future — and likely beyond. Bryson Stott will shift over to second base, leaving no room in the lineup for free-agent second baseman Jean Segura.
Segura, an 11-year veteran in the majors, joined the Phillies ahead of the 2019 season via trade. After a down year in his first season, the 32-year-old bounced back to serve as a solid presence in Philadelphia’s lineup.
Frustrating at times but invigorating on more occasions, Segura was an emblematic member of the 2022 Phillies team, which snapped a 10+ year playoff drought for both the franchise and the infielder himself.
And with Segura’s tenure with the Phillies seemingly over, here’s a list to commemorate his top five moments in Philadelphia:
5. Walk-Off Single And Bat flip
As the Phillies looked to break into the postseason this year for the first time since 2011, Segura provided one of the brightest moments of a shaky September, delivering a walk-off single against the Marlins on Sept. 6 and throwing his bat high into the sky to celebrate.
4. Opening Day Heroics
Playing in front of a crowd, although limited, for the first time since 2019, Segura made the first game of 2021 a good one for those in attendance as he chopped a walk-off single over third.
3. Walk-Off Home Run Against Edwin Díaz
A Met-killer throughout his Phillies career, Segura’s best moment against the division rivals came in his first season with the team. Facing off against star closer Edwin Díaz on June 27, he turned on a fastball to launch a three-run walk-off home run and complete a four-game sweep.
2. Go-Ahead Single To Complete Comeback In Game 1 Of Wild Card Series
Segura stepped up in his first career playoff game. Facing the Cardinals in Game 1 of this year’s Wild Card Series, he poked the go-ahead two-run single into right field in the ninth to spark a Phillies comeback win.

The quintessential Segura moment was more than just one play. Taking on the Padres in Game 3 of the NLCS, Segura’s night was a roller coaster. He dropped an easy throw in the field, but delivered a go-ahead hit — just to get picked off right away. But Segura came through again in the top of the seventh, making an incredible diving play to end the inning. The veteran flexed and yelled, excited to make his mark on that stage.
