When is Prince Harry’s memoir coming out and what can you expect?
There have been multiple TV shows and biographies about the Royal Family, and now Prince Harry is taking the narrative into his own hands with the release of his tell-all memoir.
The Royal Family is said to be bracing itself for possible bombshells to be dropped in the book.
First, though, fans of The Duke of Sussex will see him and wife Meghan open up about their lives even more in a new self-titled, six-episode documentary series for Netflix.
The first trailer for the series, which airs its first part on December 8, shared candid snaps of the couple – and we saw Meghan saying: ‘When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make sense to hear our story from us?’
A second saw Harry claim ‘we know the full truth’, adding: ‘There’s a hierarchy of the family, you know, there’s leaking, but there’s also planting of stories. It’s a dirty game.
‘The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution, this feeding frenzy. I was terrified, I didn’t want history to repeat itself.’
Even after watching the show, no doubt many will still be keen to read Prince Harry’s book which will give us even more of an insight into life behind the palace walls.
But when does his memoir come out, and what can we expect from it?
When will Prince Harry’s memoir be released?
Harry’s tell-all account of his life in the Royal Family will hit shelves on January 10, 2023.
The book was originally set to be released in late 2022, though this was pushed back several times.
This was reportedly due to re-writes Harry made, including an account of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
The 416-page book will come out in 16 languages, and will also be released in an audiobook version, read by Prince Harry himself.
You can pre-order the book now on Amazon, and a hardback edition will set you back £14 – though if you get a free Audible trial, you can listen to the publication for free.
It’s also available for pre-order through Waterstones and WHSmith, where it is also £14 – though the original RRP is listed as £28.
What is Prince Harry’s book called?
Prince Harry’s book is called Spare – thought to be a reference to his position in the line of succession.
Harry was born as third in line to the throne, behind his father King Charles III – who was, at the time, first in line as The Prince of Wales.
He was also behind his older brother, Prince William, who was second in line as Charles’ heir.
Today, Prince William is first in line to the throne, and Prince Harry is fifth.
What can you expect from the book?
Published by Transworld, an imprint of Penguin Random House UK, the reader has been promised an ‘intimate and heartfelt memoir’ from The Duke of Sussex.
Spare is set to ‘share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him’.
The memoir is said to cover everything from ‘his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father.’
However it’s also been reported that the royal household is bracing itself for the book, amid fears that it could be ‘critical of everyone and everything’.
Speaking about what the memoir will include, Harry has said: ‘I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.
‘I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.’
The book has been put together by ghostwriter J. R. Moehringer – a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist, known for his own memoir The Tender Bar and Andre Agassi’s autobiography Open.
Buckingham Palace is said to be nervously waiting to see what secrets Harry chooses to spill.
A source told The Sun back in January 2022: ‘Charles has shared his concerns with William and is keen he somehow goes on the record and sticks up for Camilla should the book attack her.
‘But as much as William loves his father, he’s unlikely to want to get involved. In all likelihood, he will try and stay neutral.’
A royal insider also told The Mirror in July 2021: ‘There is a now tsunami of fear among the royals over what Harry will write. Many hope he may correct a few things but do not hold much hope.’
How much was Prince Harry paid to write it?
Prince Harry got ‘at least $20 million (£17 million) up front’ from Penguin Random House to write the memoir, according to Page Six.
The book is part of a three-book deal worth more than £36 million, reports The Telegraph.
Some of the proceeds from Spare will be donated to charity. The publisher confirmed this is in the form of two donations of £1.3 million to Sentebale and £300,000 to WellChild.
