Hong Kong hold off Singapore’s late rally to triumph 7-6
Hong Kong’s seven runs in the game were enough to escape Singapore’sthree-run surge in the fifth inning to win 7-6 on Friday at the II WBSC U-12Softball World Cup in Jin-Long Stadium.
Matt Chui and Zita Tik each scored two runs, while Faye Lam,David Weiss and Colin Cheung added one run each to complete the seven runs thatensured their third-place spot in the Opening Round.
After a scoreless one and a half inning, Hong Kong recordedthe two runs attributed to Chui and Tik off wild pitches to lead 2-0. Singaporelevelled the score at 2-2 when Joy Tan scored on a throwing error and Edwin See’srun from Shannon Ong’s RBI single.
Hong Kong retaliated with five runs to extend their lead to7-2, while Singapore completed only one run in the fourth inning to trailwithin four runs.
Singapore had an advantage on hits 5-2 and showed a lot offight towards the end, but Southeast Asian squad ran out of chances when theirthree-run spree at the top of the fifth. The umpire ruled that Caden Chan leftearly for the third out of the inning, conceding the game at 7-6.
