The Lagos State Government, through the Safety Commission, has organised a one-day training programme on Safety, Health and Hygiene for Artisans in Lagos State, tagged: “Safety Compliance at Construction sites”.

Speaking at the workshop, the Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola said the programme was designed to enlighten company owners and artisans to take responsibility for the safety of their employees.

Mojola decried the continuous loss of lives and properties at construction sites, imploring construction companies across the state to embrace best safety practices and ensure the safety of all their workers.

Emphasising the need for companies to also make sure that their workers are adequately insured, the Director-General said the training is in line with the mandate of the Commission to ensure people are trained on best safety practices, precautionary measures and rules of engagements, among others.  a

His words: “The training is devoted to construction sector, we picked Artisans across different associations, from welders, bricklayers and electricians on how they can ensure safety of lives while on sites and be informed about insurance schemes”.

“The whole message is that they need to ensure that whatever job they are engaged in, they must ensure they are insured, in case of eventuality. This would go a long way in ensuring that they have something substantial to fall back on”, he added.

He said, according to that the International Labour Organisation (ILO), 30 to 40 percent of incidents and accidents at work places are construction related. Mojola, therefore, advised participants to always make use of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when at their various construction sites to reduce hazards to the minimum.

In his presentation on: “Essentials of Construction Safety”, the Director of Strategy, Safety Advocates at the Commission, Engr. Jamiu Badmus lectured the participants on the causes of hazards at construction sites and the need for everyone concerned to imbibe safety culture to prevent accidents.
