All I want is to spend more time with my son but my ex won’t allow it

0

DEAR DEIDRE: I WANT to spend more time with my son, but my ex won’t let me take him out.

It breaks my heart that I can’t be the father he deserves, but I’m at a loss.

I’m 28, my ex is 26 and our son has just turned three.

His mum and I broke up just over a year ago, and while we didn’t end on the best of terms, I promised her I’d be there to help co-parent our son.

But initially, she didn’t let me see him at all. No matter what I tried, it was as if she was set on shutting me out of his life.

After a lot of persistence, she began letting me see him at her house, where she could watch us at all times.

I’ve asked on many occasions if I can take him for a day out, or have him sleep over at my house, yet she always tells me that I can’t be trusted.

I don’t understand why she won’t let me be more involved in his life.

What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: You are right to be upset. She cannot stop you from seeing your child unless the court orders you to do so.

The responsibility of taking care of a child rests with both parents in these situations, so it’s important that you don’t give up.

Contact Families Need Fathers (fnf.org.uk, 0300 0300 363) who offer information, advice and support services to help maintain a child’s relationship with both parents during and after a family breakdown.
