Four killed when car hits tree near Granite Bay Golf Club

Four men were killed Wednesday night when a car hit a tree and burst into flames in a Granite Bay neighborhood, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 9:04 p.m. on Roseville Parkway west of the Granite Bay Golf Club.

A Mercedes-Benz CLS driven by a 61-year-old Roseville man was eastbound on the residential street when it veered into the bike lane, jumped the curb, hit a tree and skidded sideways into a second tree. It then caught fire.

All of the car’s occupants were declared dead at the scene, the CHP said. The passengers were men from Granite Bay, ages 65, 53 and 45. Their names have not been released.

The road was closed until about 12:30 a.m.

A CHP spokesman told TV station KCRA that the car was believed to have been going “well above” the speed limit of 40 mph. Investigators had not yet determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor.

That stretch of Roseville Parkway winds through a tree-lined greenbelt with entrances to several subdivisions, including Scarsborough, Kentfield, Windemere and the Village at Treelake.
