The BBC programme sees students from across the UK answer a series of difficult questions in one of TV’s toughest quizzes.

In a classic episode of the show one contestant was left shocked over her teammate’s answer to a question.

Former presenter Jeremy Paxman can be seen in a clip posing the tricky question.

The 72-year-old said at the time: “What name is given to a frost that forms when water vaper comes into contact with a surface that is already below zero?”

The contestant wasn’t sure what the correct answer was, so immediately turned to her teammate for help.

However, she was left dumbfounded when it appeared he called her a very rude name.

Her fellow contestant replied to her by saying the answer was “hoar”.

She couldn’t believe what had left his mouth and asked: “Is it really?”

“Yeah it is, I’m not just saying it,” he quipped back.

The woman then turned to Paxman and repeated the word.

“Hoar is correct, yes, spelt differently,” Jeremy replied.

Fans of the show were left in hysterics over the exchange, as one said: “I bet who ever made that question was in state when that was approved.”

Another said: “His facial expressions! The chuckle, then realization, seriousness and stern.”

“Did she actually think he was calling her a wh***,” said a third.

While a fourth posted: “The way he had to confirm he wasn’t calling her a wh***.”
