High school roundup: Salesian girls basketball team wins league opener 58-3

No. 3 Salesian 58,  De Anza 3

De Anza finished first in the Tri-County Athletic League Stone Division last season, a championship that bumped the El Sobrante school to the higher Rock Division this season.

In its Rock opener Thursday night, De Anza got a bitter taste of what the stronger division is like.

Salesian, ranked third in the latest Bay Area News Group Top 25, led 26-2 after one quarter, 36-2 at halftime and 45-2 after three quarters.

D’Yani Bernstine led Salesian with 12 points and seven steals. Nyana Asiasi added 11 points and nine rebounds as the Pride improved to 4-0.

Nine players scored for Salesian, last season’s Division I state champion.

De Anza has scored fewer than 20 points five times in its nine losses and has yet to reach 30. Its only win was by forfeit over McClymonds.

No. 4 Carondelet 63, Soquel 30

After winning two of three at a tournament in Hawaii, the Cougars returned to the mainland and cruised past Soquel at the Notre Dame-Belmont tournament. Allie Cummins scored 16 points and Sophia Ross added 14 to lead Carondelet (8-1).

No. 5 Sacred Heart Cathedral 69, Archbishop Riordan 48

SHC bounced back from a 60-55 loss to Salesian on Tuesday by rolling past host Archbishop Riordan in a non-league game. Inez Gallegos had 18 points and nine rebounds, Reza Po added 14 points and seven rebounds and Aniyah Versosa scored 17 points for SHC (9-1). Riordan is 3-5.

No. 19 Monte Vista 43, Liberty 33

Monte Vista held a 21-7 lead at halftime and remained in control to beat tournament host Liberty. Nia Coleman had 18 points and Sarina Nagra scored 15 points for Monte Vista (4-1). Liberty fell to 4-5.

Vanden-Fairfield 41, California 37 (OT)

California lost for the first time this season, falling in overtime to Vanden-Fairfield at the Liberty tournament in Brentwood. Lauren Yee (10 points), Taylor Lim (nine points) and Zareena Mann (10 rebounds) led California, which fell to 5-1.

Placer 68, No. 10 California 58

California, trailing by two points after three quarters, was outscored 21-13 in the fourth in a loss to Placer at the Dublin tournament. Amari Gray scored 24 points and Adam Zalmai had 14 points to lead California (6-3).

Mehki Thomas scored 15 points and Donovan Cooks had 14 to lead host Dublin to a rout of Fairfield in the opening round of the Don Nelson Classic. Courtney Anderson and Isaiah Wong each had nine points for Dublin (6-3).

The King’s Academy 79, Independence 43

Jon Taylor scored 35 points to lead The King’s Academy to a rout of Independence at the Fremont-Sunnyvale tournament. The winning side also got 15 points from Bryce Sherman and 14 from Tylek Barnett. TKA improved to 8-0. Independence fell to 4-4.

Liberty 67, Lodi 63

Quinton Bundage finished with 22 points to lead Liberty past Lodi at the Clayton Valley tournament. Miles Lawrence (13), Julian Costa (12) and Gavin Cook Whisenton (10) also scored in double figures for Liberty, which has won four in a row since a season-opening loss to Oakland Tech.

Boys soccer

No. 5 Richmond 2, St. Mary’s-Berkeley 0

Kevin Romo scored two second-half goals to propel host Richmond to a Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division victory over St. Mary’s. Romo scored on a penalty kick and added a second goal on an assist by Yuber Castaneda. Richmond improved to 3-0. St. Mary’s fell to 1-3.

Girls soccer

No. 4 Menlo-Atherton 4, Palo Alto 0

Valerie Latu-Nava, Tatum Olesen, Kate Nelson and Alessia Bolanos scored second-half goals on the road against Palo Alto as M-A improved to 6-0-1. Angelina Edwards had four saves. Palo Alto fell to 1-5.

No. 5 St. Ignatius 1, No. 9 Monte Vista 1

Bella Turok’s goal gave St. Ignatius a 1-0 first-half lead, but Monte Vista’s Sophia Carbone evened the score in the second half at the Tri-Valley Classic in Danville. St. Ignatius is 2-0-1. Monte Vista is 1-0-1.
