Men's Basketball 

The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team went 1-0 this past week as they defeated Avila University 87-70. Senior Cam Southern led the way for the Spires with 24 points as Junior Deshaud St. Martin grabbed nine rebounds. The Spires shot 52% from the field while holding Avila to 49 % shooting. Saint Mary is now 5-9 overall and 1-7 in the KCAC. Their next contest will be against Drury University for an exhibition game at 1 p.m. on December 31st in Springfield, Missouri.

Women's Basketball

The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team went 2-0 this week with victories over the Avila Eagles (71-35) and Haskell Indian Nations (88-83). Against Avila, Jerrica Johnson scored 13 points and had six rebounds. The Spires shot 44% from the field, while stout defensive play held the Eagles to 23% shooting on the day to earn the 71-35 win. On Saturday against Haskell, Johnson scored a team-high 29 points while Tanea Sims recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds as the Spires rallied for an 88-83 win. Saint Mary is now 8-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play, heading into an exhibition match against Missouri Western State University at 4 p.m. on December 28th in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Men's Wrestling

The University of Saint Mary Men's Wrestling team competed in the Eagle Duals on Saturday, they ended the day with a 2-2 record, beating Missouri and Williams Baptist. The Spires started the day strong against Missouri Baptist, beating the Spartans 33-15. Hartwell Taylor got Saint Mary on the board with a win by fall shortly after the start of the third period. Austin Almaguer got the win the 149-weight class due to it being left open by Missouri Baptist. Saint Mary got two more wins after Trace Evans and Jackson Jones got wins in the 157 and 165 weight classes. Gabe Chesbro and Cody Adams finished things off for the Spires with wins by fall to give Saint Mary a 33-15. Williams Baptist took the lead over Saint Mary after winning two early matches. The Spires responded with five straight wins, three of them coming by fall and one by tech fall. Maxx Demann had the fastest win by fall in the match, pinning his opponent just 41 seconds into the 174 match. Overall, the Spires had eight wins by fall on and two wins by tech fall on the day. They will resume competition after the start of the new year on January 5th against Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Women's Wrestling

The University of Saint Mary Women's Wrestling team competed in the Eagle Duals Friday Night. The Spires went 1-3 on the day. The Spires got off to a slow start, dropping their first three matches to Iowa Wesleyan. Their first victory came in the 123 class, with Alisha Van Scoy winning by forfeit. Rebekah Koolstra got Saint Mary their only other win of the match in the 170 class. Saint Mary faced off against Central Methodist in the second match of the event. A forfeit got the Spires on the board early, but Central Methodist responded with back-to-back wins. Van Scoy and Teya Villalpando won their matches by fall to give Saint Mary momentum. The Spires later got a key win after Daisy Scholz pinned her opponent, but it was not enough, as CMU ran away with a 28-20 win. The third match of the day came against William Penn, where the Spires fell 23-19. Van Scoy had another impressive win, pinning her opponent with a minute left in the round. Araya Boday and Scholz cruised to easy tech fall victories, but forfeits gave William Penn the victory. The final match of the day featured Boday again winning by tech fall as the Spires won 29-11 over Baker University. The Spires will host York University at 5 p.m. on January 6th at Ryan Sports Center.
