All Saints in Loughborough, Leics, used an amended US version of the 17th century English hymn — which refers to Jesus’s birth and shepherds’ joy — to salute the “queer and questioning”.
Another new line reads: “God rest you also, women, who by men have been erased. Through history ignored and scorned, defiled and displaced.”
But Cardinal Nichols, 77, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, said traditional lyrics must be respected.
He told Times Radio that the rituals of Christmas helped people to step outside their “own little bubble” and connect with something they have inherited and hoped to pass on, such as the “continuation of musical repertoire”.
For him, he said, the rituals were “more important than particular sensitivities which come and go”.
The Church of England’s Diocese of Leicester said its churches “represent a wide range of theological tradition and opinion”.
