A construction project for a wastetoenergy plant will finally begin on Friday. The plant will be built at the Bandhwari landfill site, and the first phase will see the building of a boundary wall and a retaining wall to stop sliding of legacy waste and to avoid any hindrance in the construction work. Ulb Minister Kamal Gupta will inaugurate the work at the Bandhwari landfill site. Officials of the waste concessionaire, Ecogreen, said that the engineering procurement and construction contract for the plant has been given to an agency, so the work is going to start. Ruchika Takkar of the Citizen's Initiative, Why Waste Your Wastes, said that incineration is an easy approach to manage waste, but waste does not just disappear in a puff of smoke. She added that the emphasis should have been segregated collection of waste and municipal ward level resource recovery plans, exhausting all sustainable options of waste management before setting up capacities for burn technology - one of the most polluting methods of waste treatment.
