Inside tiny bunker real-life caveman lived in for 3 YEARS before he was kicked out by cops
A HERMIT who lived in an underground bunker that he dug himself for three years has been evicted by police.
The 38-year-old man, dubbed ‘The Caveman of Haughley’, had lived in the 15ft by 15ft shelter in the woodland near Stowmarket, Suffolk, since 2019.
He excavated the home by hand, including 3ft high walls, a trapdoor entrance and a roof made from timber poles.
However, cops received several complaints of him threatening locals, leaving many scared to walk through the woods.
Shortly before Christmas, police forced him out of his home, using anti-social behaviour powers.
Officers used a digger to fill in the whole to prevent the man from moving back in and he is now in the care of a relative.
A tweet announcing the move met with mixed reaction from the public.
One Twitter user fumed: “Seems heartless and authoritarian. I highly suspect you abused those powers to remove someone who had fallen on hard times.
“You destroyed his home which he had built with his own two hands. This is not something you should be proudly promoting online. Shame on you.”
Another wrote: “If someone chooses to live off grid leave them, not like he was doing any harm…quite impressive really.”
Others, though, hit back, with one saying: “To all the people angry at this, he has had multiple incidents with the police and attacking or threatening people around that area so moving him on is clearly the right thing to do.”
Another villager said: “I think he just wanted to get away from it all and live a simple life – but I heard of incidents when he got quite violent.
“He had knives and some people were threatened if they got too close. It made a lot of people too scared to go up there.”
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “The male took up residence in the area around February 2019, living in a tent.
“Due to ongoing reports of ASB, criminal activity and safeguarding for the male police have worked with partners to use police ASB powers for him to vacate, and the land returned to public use with hole being filled in and land cleared.
“The dwelling was located in in a wooded area off the old A14 Haughley bends, Stowmarket. He is now receiving care from a family member.”
