Kent Police issue tickets to Dartford man after Toyota Yaris spotted with faulty lights

A driver was hit with a double blow of tickets after being pulled over by police in Dartford.

The man was pulled over after officers noticed a fault with his Toyota Yaris.

The vehicle had two faulty brake lights – which is illegal as it means that other cars might not be able to tell if the driver is braking.

Under UK law, police are able to issue a ticket known as a 'vehicle defect rectification notice', which gives the driver 14 days to provide proof that they have fixed the dangerous fault.

However, when officers walked up to the vehicle, they also found that the driver had not been wearing a seatbelt.

When questioned, the man responded that he had "forgotten" to put the belt on.

Commonly, on-the-spot fines of around £100 can be issued for such offences, although these can be waived if the driver signs up to a driving awareness course for the cost of £52.

A tweet from Kent Police Road Patrol Unit (RPU) said that "tickets were issued for both offences".

Police have been contacted for more information.
