My girlfriend’s family won’t stop criticising me

0

DEAR DEIDRE: EVEN though my girlfriend and I are happy and I treat her really well, her family won’t stop criticising me.

I can’t understand what I’ve done wrong, and the worst part is that they’ve never even met me.

I’m a 31-year-old woman, and my girlfriend is 29. We’ve been dating for around seven months.

We’ve gone from strength to strength, and very recently took a big step and moved in together.

We live 300 miles away from my girlfriend’s family, so I haven’t met them in person yet.

We’ve had plenty of video calls, and my girlfriend regularly updates them with our lives. But they are never shy about voicing their disapproval of me.

Whether it’s my career, my appearance or even how much money I make, it just seems that I’m not good enough.

My girlfriend insists they are joking, but it’s really starting to get me down.

DEIDRE SAYS: Her family is most likely feeling protective of her, but this doesn’t mean they should put you down.

Your partner is probably feeling torn between you and them. Perhaps she wants to stand up for you, but doesn’t know how to.

Ask her to explain to her family that she has chosen and loves you, and would appreciate their support.

My support pack Looking After Your Relationship will give you the tools you need.
