Jaquan Brisker Took The “Keep Justin Fields” Campaign Up A Notch
One thing has become apparent over the past month. While fans and media argue over what the Chicago Bears should do at quarterback once the season ends, there has been no division inside the locker room. Multiple players have stated publicly they don’t understand why there is even a discussion of moving on from Fields. In their eyes, he is the leader and an undeniable playmaker. Reports from insiders like Jeremy Fowler of ESPN have indicated a strong groundswell of support inside Halas Hall to keep him. One person who has made that clearer than ever is Jaquan Brisker.
The young safety has publicly said that he believes in Fields and wants him to stay. Now, it appears Brisker is using other methods to get that point across. Always a presence on social media, he’s begun liking various tweets supporting Fields while also trashing potential replacements like USC star Caleb Williams.
It is another clear indication of where the locker room mindset is right now. They are firmly in the Fields camp. Does Poles share their feelings? Recent revelations suggest he might. Ian Rapoport revealed that the odds are favorable that head coach Matt Eberflus will return next season. It feels hard to imagine the Bears would do that if they planned to make a change at quarterback. They probably don’t want to recreate another Matt Nagy situation in 2021.
Jaquan Brisker doesn’t control the narrative.
Being vocal with his support is a good thing. Having teammates get behind the quarterback like this is always positive. However, Fields is the one who controls how this will go. He has two games left against Atlanta and Green Bay. While he doesn’t necessarily have to win both, it would go a long way in securing his spot. At the very least, he needs to play well. Delivering two clunkers to end the season isn’t going to help his case, especially if the Bears end up with the #1 overall pick as expected.
One way to help him would be two more strong performances by the defense. Jaquan Brisker has played great football down the stretch, becoming the versatile weapon in the secondary they envisioned. If they can hold down Atlanta and Green Bay to around 20 points apiece, it should give Fields the necessary window to finish strong. The key will be avoiding turnovers and generating consistent drives. The Falcons are only 15th against the run. Green Bay is 30th. Chicago should be able to exploit those matchups.
