Apple is working to reduce its platform lock-in because of the Digital Markets Act

Macworld.com

Macworld

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act has had a huge impact on Apple, a company that has become synonymous with the “walled garden” approach to interoperability. The company recently published a “Non-confidential summary of DMA compliance report” (is there a confidential version?) which summarizes the ways in which Apple has changed to comply with the new regulations.

Most of it is stuff we already know. With iOS 17.4, customers in the EU are presented with their choice of browsers... Читать дальше...

How to type a hashtag (#) on Mac

Macworld.com

Macworld

The hash symbol (also known as the pound/number sign, and which looks like this: #) was one of the more rarely used special characters until Twitter and Instagram came along. Now you can barely avoid the symbol widely known as the hashtag and ubiquitous on social media.

But how do you type a hash or hashtag symbol on a Mac? Well, that depends on your keyboard layout. For readers using the standard U.S. layout, it’s pretty simple, and we’ll cover those guys later in this article. Читать дальше...

You can finally run dual external displays on the M3 MacBook Air: Here’s how

Macworld.com

Macworld

With the release of the M3 MacBook Air, Apple introduced a new feature for M3 laptops. These MacBooks can now run two external displays, but the laptop must be closed. It’s a handy feature for production environments or for presentations. This feature is also coming to the M3 MacBook Pro in a future macOS update.

The two external displays must support a video connection over USB-C or Thunderbolt 3. Also, the two displays can each be 5K at 60Hz, for example, two Apple Studio Displays. Читать дальше...

15-inch M3 MacBook Air hands-on: Pretty, pretty, pretty good

Macworld.com

Macworld

Apple announced the new M3 MacBook Air last Monday and it’s available to pre-order now, with shipments and Apple Store retail arrival on Friday, March 8. We got our hands on the new laptop, and before we publish our full review next week, we have some first impressions.

We got a Starlight 15-inch MacBook Air. We didn’t get a Midnight laptop, so we can’t check out the “breakthrough anodization seal” Apple has developed to reduce fingerprints, which was one of the criticisms of the M2 model. Читать дальше...

That foldable MacBook rumor makes more sense than you’d think

Macworld.com

Macworld

Apple remains oddly reticent about entering the burgeoning foldable market, with the first folding iPhone still nowhere to be seen an astonishing five years after Samsung unveiled the first Galaxy Fold. It’s tempting to assume, at this point, that Apple might have decided to skip this market entirely and focus on mixed reality.

But a new report suggests that, while there are currently no plans for either a foldable iPhone or a foldable iPad, Apple does have something in mind. Читать дальше...

How to move items between Mac apps using the App Switcher

Macworld.com

Macworld

You can always find some hidden magic in macOS’s Finder, even if you think you know all the tricks. It’s only recently that I realized I had been underutilizing what you could call “drag, tab, drop” or “drag switch.”

Anywhere in macOS, you can invoke the app switcher using the shortcut Command-Tab. It shows all open apps in the order of last invoked from left (newest) to right. While holding down the Command key, pressing Command-Tab or Command-Shift-Tab cycles you forward or backward through those open apps. Читать дальше...
