How major US stock indexes fared Thursday, 4/4/2024

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

U.S. stocks slumped after a Federal Reserve official raised the possibility of delivering none of the cuts to interest rates this year that Wall Street has been banking on, if inflation worsens. The S&P 500 dropped 1.2% Thursday for its worst day since February. It erased an earlier gain of nearly 1% that had brought it to the cusp of its record. The Dow swung 1.4% lower, and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.4%. Markets were already unsettled before Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari expressed concern about inflation. Читать дальше...

NY is state demanding more information on Trump's $175 million appeal bond in civil fraud case

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

New York state lawyers are demanding more information on the bona fides of the $175 million bond that former President Donald Trump posted to block the imminent collection of a huge civil fraud judgment. State Attorney General Letitia James’ office filed papers giving Trump’s lawyers or the bond underwriter 10 days to “justify” the bond. That essentially means showing that the company can make good, and it could mean disclosing more about the collateral Trump provided. Trump lawyer Christopher Kise... Читать дальше...

Records show Axos Bank, as well as its largest individual shareholder, have extended more than $500 million in financing that has benefited Trump. The money has helped pay off debts, covered the down payment of a massive civil fraud penalty and helped Trump pocket a tidy profit while escaping from a lease on a money-losing hotel. Brazil’s justice ministry said in a statement on Thursday that the two were arrested in the Amazon city of Maraba, more than 1,600 kilometers — or about 995 miles — west of the Mossoro penitentiary where they were imprisoned in the country’s northeast. Lawsuit challenging Indiana abortion ban survives a state challenge

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Indiana's Court of Appeals says the state's near total ban on abortion may infringe on the religious freedom of some residents. The ruling released Thursday is tied to a lawsuit challenging the ban and filed by four residents and the group Hoosier Jews for Choice. The three-judge panel agreed with a county judge's previous ruling that residents whose sincerely held religious beliefs may require them to obtain an abortion should be exempt from the ban. The ruling does not have an immediate effect. Читать дальше...

Pressure builds from Nebraska Trump loyalists for a winner-take-all system

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Far-right conservatives loyal to former President Donald Trump continue their push for Nebraska to adopt a “winner-take-all system” of awarding Electoral College votes. That's despite having almost no viable avenue to do so with only five days left in this year’s legislative session. The Nebraska Republican Party will hold a rally Tuesday in Omaha featuring conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The rally will target the state’s atypical system of splitting its five presidential electoral votes based... Читать дальше...

Judge denies Trump bid to dismiss classified documents prosecution

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A federal judge has refused to throw out the classified documents prosecution against Donald Trump. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon rejected a defense argument that the case should be tossed because he was entitled as a former president to retain the records after he left office. Lawyers for Trump had cited a 1978 statute known as the Presidential Records Act in arguing that he was permitted to designate records from his time in office as personal and take them with him when he left the White House.
