The United Arab Emirates is struggling to recover from the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation, as its main airport worked to restore normal operations even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and roads. Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. The UAE, a hereditarily ruled, autocratic nation on the Arabian Peninsula, typically sees little rainfall in its arid desert climate. Читать дальше...
America stands with Japan until all Japanese abducted by North Korea decades ago return home to end their painful separation. That's according to the United States ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield as she started her Japan visit with a meeting of their families. Japan says North Korea abducted at least 17 Japanese citizens, possibly many more, to train them as agents during the 1970s and 1980s. Twelve remain missing. South Africa faces an unusual national election this year, its seventh vote since transitioning from white minority rule to a democracy 30 years ago. Polls and analysts warn that for the first time, the ruling African National Congress party that has comfortably held power since Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black president in 1994 might receive less than 50% of votes. One big reason is Jacob Zuma, the former president and ANC leader who stepped down in disgrace in 2018 amid a swirl of... Читать дальше...

Louisiana is awaiting a decision from three federal judges that could affect the balance of power in Congress — and the fortunes of two prominent state politicians. At issue is a congressional map that was approved this year with the backing of the state’s new Republican governor, Jeff Landry, though some Republicans aren't happy about it. The map creates a new mostly Black congressional district in Louisiana, at the expense of a white Republican incumbent, Rep. Garret Graves. Graves backed a Landry opponent last fall. Читать дальше...
A quarter of a century after the Columbine High School shooting, the trauma from the attack has remained with survivors. Some have taken years to identify themselves as survivors since they were not physically wounded. The aftershocks — often unacknowledged in the years before mental health struggles were more widely recognized — led to some survivors suffering insomnia, dropping out of school, or disengaging from their spouses or families. But some have developed healthy ways to cope with the shadow... Читать дальше...
The head of the U.N. agency that has helped millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank for decades is urging the U.N.
