CINCINNATI — Text messages introduced Friday in a federal racketeering trial showed that lobbyist Matt Borges had tried to convince his former boss, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, to reject proposed ballot language that could have derailed plans to get a $1.3 billion customer-financed nuclear power plant bailout to FirstEnergy Corp.



Alien Carnival brings new energy to retro rock sound

It was rehearsal night at Alien Carnival’s home base just off Central Avenue near the Buffalo Wild Wings in Toledo. The cavernous space was illuminated by black neon lights that cast hallucinatory shadows all over the walls, which were covered with rock posters and banners. It was a perfect location for crafting good, homegrown, dirty, Midwest rock ‘n’ roll, which Alien Carnival does well. Very well.

There is much we still don’t know about the brain to effectively treat heartbreaking disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, addiction and more. Researchers at The University of Toledo are working to better understand how the brain responds to toxins and other influences to create more effective therapeutics for a variety of diseases.

Stephen W. Kuzma, an East Toledo native and a New York City-based artist whose realist-style paintings won admirers, even when the art world trended abstract, died Jan. 6 in Otterbein Pemberville SeniorLife Community in Wood County. He was 89.
