Over two dozen gallons of pool chemicals spilled in Delray Beach crash

0

A two-car crash that involved a truck towing a trailer full of pool chemicals on  Wednesday afternoon caused a section of South Congress Avenue in Delray Beach to be closed for hours while a hazmat team cleaned up over two dozen gallons of chlorine and acid from the road, officials said.

Delray Beach Police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, about 2 p.m. that northbound lanes in the 200 block of South Congress Avenue were closed as Delray Beach Fire Rescue’s hazmat team cleaned the spill. The lanes reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Dani Moschella, a fire department spokesperson, said the hazmat team arrived shortly before 1 p.m. About 25 gallons of chlorine and an unspecified amount of a “strong acid” were spilled in the crash, she said.

The hazmat team neutralized the chemicals, which if mixed, could cause a deadly, low-lying gas, she said.

A Toyota RAV4 and the Ford F-150 towing the chemicals were involved in the crash. No one was injured, she said.

Officials did not provide further details about the circumstances of the crash.
