‘The Amazing Race 35’ episode 6 recap: Who got U-turned and who was eliminated in ‘Driving Head On Into Scooters’? [LIVE BLOG]
Tonight on “The Amazing Race,” for the first time in history, the votes for the mandatory U-turn are in and one team must complete both detours in India, bundling up flowers and transporting building materials on rickshaws in the bustling streets of Jaipur. This episode titled on “Driving Head on Into Scooters” airs Wednesday, November 1 (9:30-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS. Phil Keoghan hosts.
CBS promised “the biggest season yet,” with 13 teams competing for the first time ever. We also see the return of commercial travel, no non-elimination legs, the express pass and a twist on the infamous U-Turn! Here are the teams still in contention: Liam & Yemeri (brothers), Malaina & Andrea (best friends), Steve & Anna Leigh (father/daughter), Morgan & Lena (sisters), Ashlie & Todd (married), Robbin & Chelsea (childhood friends), Greg & John (brothers), Rob & Corey (father/son) and Joel & Garrett (best friends). See the full cast in the gallery above. Follow our live blog recap of tonight’s episode below.
9:30 p.m. — Previously, on “The Amazing Race”! In episode 5, teams traveled more than 2,000 miles from Vietnam to India where they had to balance traditional pots on their heads while performing a folk dance and assemble a life-size, three-dimensional mural. Following the Roadblock and Detour, Steve & Anna Leigh leaped into first place while Joe & Ian were edged out at the Pit Stop and eliminated. Let’s continue the race!
9:35 p.m. — As the next leg begins, teams will cast their mandatory U-turn vote to determine who will have to complete both Detours on the upcoming leg. We see a few votes, but won’t get the actual results until the teams hit the Detour. The race continues with Steve & Anna Leigh heading out first with the clue sending them by taxi to a shoe store for their next clue.
9:45 p.m. — Steve & Anna Leigh have a slight hiccup when their taxi driver drops them off more than a half mile from the shoe store. They still arrive first, receiving a clue instructing them to use a monocular to find their next clue among the windows of the Hawa Mahal. After taking some time to focus, the father/daughter duo figure it out and head to their next destination on foot. Next, they must help a rickshaw driver get out of a parking nightmare before taking a ride to their next clue. Steve & Anna Leigh make quick work of the task and head to SD Masala Spice Shop No. 49. Here, they’ll find out who has been U-turned.
9:55 p.m. — Steve & Anna Leigh reach the clue box to discover they’ve been U-turned. Anna Leigh looks furious, but I’m not sure what she expected. They entered this leg in first place. I’m surprised to see Robbin & Chelsea were a close second in the vote count. In this Detour teams will choose between two tasks, except for Steve & Anna Leigh who must complete both. In “Bundles,” teams will bundle a variety of flowers just as the locals do. After packing their rickshaws, they must deliver flowers to two different temples and collect a receipt. Once they return and hang up their receipt with their market vendor, they’ll receive their next clue. In “Bricks,” teams will pick up bricks, sand and gravel. Then they’ll navigate the streets of Jaipur in their rickshaw before dropping off their building supplies at a construction site. After returning their delivering receipt to their supplier they’ll get their next clue. Steve & Anna Leigh quickly get to work bundling flowers. They still have a solid lead, so this double U-turn may not send them packing like their opponents hope.
10:15 p.m. — Greg & John arrive at the Detour and are thrilled they weren’t U-turned. They get to work collecting bricks while Steve & Anna Leigh are still bundling flowers. This is their opportunity to take first place. Joel & Garrett are next to arrive, followed by Andrea & Malaina. Steve & Anna Leigh have finished delivering flowers and can move on to their second Detour with plenty of teams still behind them. As other teams arrive, they see the father/daughter duo have already finished bundling flowers. I’m not sure why nobody thinks to change Detours, since clearly bundling flowers was a quick task. When Steve & Anna Leigh arrive to collect bricks, they realize they failed to deliver their flower receipts from the previous task. They must go deliver their receipts and come back. This will cost them quite a bit of time. Anna Leigh thinks they’re “out of the race,” but there’s still plenty of time.
10:30 p.m. — Teams are quickly realizing the chaos of navigating through Jaipur. There aren’t typical traffic stops and Todd & Ashlie talk about how much respect they have for the people in this city. Near the back of the pack, Lena gets “spicy” with her sister Morgan. They’re clearly stressed out, but they have no idea how much time they’ve made up. Up front, Greg & John have delivered their bricks and head back to deliver receipts. Todd & Ashlie are next. Liam & Yeremi are currently in last place and their rickshaw driver isn’t helping. She’s quickly passed by Andrea & Malaina’s driver. Now in first place, Greg & John receive their next clue. They’ll travel by rickshaw to a fabric shop and pick up some fabric and a clue from the owner.
10:45 p.m. — Lost, hot and thirsty, Joel & Garrett are desperate to find water. Once they get some water in their system they said the psychological impact was instant. They get back to work. Meanwhile, Greg & John have reached the fabric store in first place. They get their next clue, sending them to Jaipur Mahal via rickshaw. Rob & Corey are right behind them followed by Joel & Garrett and Todd & Ashlie. Back at the Detour, Morgan & Lena overtake Andrea & Malaina and put themselves in fifth place. Struggling most are Robbin & Chelsea and Liam & Yeremi, who all seem to have rickshaw drivers that have no idea where they’re going.
11:00 p.m. — Greg & John and Rob & Corey have reached the Roadblock. In “Who Likes to Play With Blocks?” one team member must print nine peacocks using printing blocks. Greg and Rob are completing this task, with Greg looking more efficient. Currently in the back of the pack are Robbin & Chelsea and Liam & Yeremi. They’ve chosen different Detours, so it’s difficult to know who is currently in last place. Greg & John finish the Roadblock and head to the Pit Stop at Badi Chaupar. They arrive in first place and win a trip for two to New Zealand. See the full list of results for this leg below. With everyone finished with the Roadblock except Liam & Yeremi, they’re going to need a miracle. They’re not going to get it. They finish in last place this leg and have been eliminated from the race.
