Sports Briefs: Tam, TL girls, San Marin boys advance in water polo playoffs

Tam High rolled past first-round foe Vintage, 22-1, as the Red-Tailed Hawks opened the North Coast Section Division II tournament Wednesday at Novato High.

Julia Ulvestad, Reese Arwin and Sabin Barringer each scored four goals for the Hawks, got a strong defensive effort in net from Nola Palestrant.

“We got a lot of goals on excellent passing and driving up the middle,” Tam head coach Paul Hettler said.

The seventh-seeded Hawks (12-14) are scheduled to play No. 2 Alameda (21-4) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

• No. 8 Terra Linda kicked off the NCS D-II playoffs with a stellar 7-6 victory in sudden death overtime against No. 9 Alhambra on Wednesday at Marin Academy. The Trojans (13-10) advance to a matchup with top-seeded Marin Academy, the MCAL’s second-place team, in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Boys water polo

Saturday’s NCS D-II quarterfinals will feature a crosstown rivalry between No. 2 Novato and No. 7 San Marin. The Mustangs (13-10) edged No. 10 Mission San Jose, 11-10, on Wednesday at Novato High.

Men’s water polo

Archie Williams High grad Dylan Woodhead scored twice as Team USA defeated Brazil, 24-7, to wrap up group competition at the Pan American Games in Chile. The Americans are scheduled to face host Chile in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Men’s soccer

Diego Grande scored twice as Dominican University built a strong lead and held on for a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over Biola in La Mirada. Grande recorded his third multi-goal game of the season for the Penguins (7-5-3, 6-2-1 PacWest). Dominican controlled the pace of play for most of the game as the Eagles (5-7-4, 3-3-2 PacWest) had half the shots on goal as the Penguins with six for the game.

Women’s soccer

Dominican University goalkeeper Natalie Haro had two saves as she secured the shutout in a scoreless tie with Biola on Wednesday afternoon in La Mirada. The Penguins (5-9-2, 1-5-2 PacWest) finished with six shots on goal compared to two for the Eagles (4-9-2, 3-4-1 PacWest).
