A second Trump term portends a 'very unstable future': GOP strategist

Republican operative Scott Jennings told CNN on Thursday that he is worried about reports that former President Donald Trump's aides are scouting around for lawyers who will be willing to go significantly further than the lawyers in his first administration who resisted his efforts to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 election.

When asked about the report by host Phil Mattingly, Jennings began by seemingly trying to give a positive interpretation of Trump aides' desires for lawyers who are willing to risk their reputations in the legal community to do the former president's bidding.

"I think what they are saying is, is that in the first term we didn't go far enough because we didn't have the right people in place and maybe we didn't have the full understanding of how to go far enough," he said. "Now they are saying we will get smarter people, better people, and, frankly, people willing to challenge the norms and guardrails that exist, you know, for most presidential administrations."

Jennings went on to discuss the potentially darker aspects of this effort.

"I worry about it because we have argued, Republicans have argued, that Democrats have challenged norms, challenged institutions, have tried to go around the Constitution," he said. "So if you are also promising to do that, to me it portends a very unstable future."
