Trump's 'toxic' rants put him 'in direct opposition to the law': National Review writer
Former President Donald Trump seems intent on defying the gag orders placed on him in his numerous court cases -- and conservative National Review legal analyst Henry Olsen thinks that it's going to land him in hot water.
In his latest column, Olsen explains that gag orders are common in criminal defense cases and that there are legitimate debates to be had about whether the scope of the current orders go too far in restricting a presidential candidate's free speech rights.
However, Olsen also believes that Trump's perpetually pugilistic personality is creating a "toxic brew" that "puts him in direct opposition to the law" so long as he continues launching "characteristically bombastic and shrill comments about his cases."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
In fact, Olsen speculates that Trump secretly wants to be jailed for flouting court orders because it will make his base rally around him even further.
While this might prove effective for him politically, Olsen argues, it would be unprecedented in American political history.
"The idea of a former president maneuvering himself into being disciplined by the court, or perhaps even jailed, for political advantage would have been laughably fantastic just a decade ago," he concludes. "In today’s Trump-dominated fun-house version of politics, it is depressingly likely."
