NAI calls for ending culture of impunity for crimes against journalists

As November 2nd marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the Afghan media advocacy organization, NAI, has called for an end to the culture of impunity surrounding crimes against journalists. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and safety of journalists, who play a vital role in upholding freedom of the press and the principles of free and independent media.

On Thursday, the Afghan media advocacy organization NAI issued a simultaneous statement on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. In their declaration, NAI not only called for an end to the culture of impunity surrounding crimes against journalists but also highlighted a staggering statistic: Over the past two decades, more than 165 cases of journalists and media personnel being killed in Afghanistan have been documented by their office. This grim reality underscores the urgent need for accountability and the protection of journalistic freedom in the country.

This organization has stated that over the past two decades, “most of the journalists and media personnel murdered were the victims of violence, with even the rule of law being powerless against their assailants.”

Nevertheless, NAI, while expressing concerns about the ongoing violence and killings of
journalists and media personnel have called on responsible authorities to address cases of violence and journalist killings.

NAI has also appealed to the International Criminal Court to officially recognize the murders of journalists and media personnel in Afghanistan as crimes against humanity.
The Afghan media advocacy organization, NAI, has emphasized that this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists comes at a time when four journalists have lost their lives in Afghanistan.

The United Nations has designated November 2nd as the International Day to “End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.” Today, the emphasis is on protecting journalists and media personnel, supporting freedom of expression, and strengthening democratic values.
