Report: Spurs and Newcastle could battle it out for Brazilian wonderkid
According to Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United could be set for a battle for the signature of Santos wonderkid Marcos Leonardo.
Leonardo is seen by many as the next potential superstar to emerge out of Brazil, with the forward taking the Brasileiro Serie A by storm since breaking into Santos’ first team.
The centre-forward has found the back of the net 21 times in 41 games across all competitions this season (Transfermarkt) and it appears like a call-up to the senior Selecao squad might just be around the corner for the youngster.
Spurs and Newcastle are both looking at Leonardo
Sport Witness have claimed that both Spurs and Newcastle are keeping tabs on the situation on the 21-year-old, who is now thought to be ‘on the verge’ of a move to Europe.
The outlet explains that Leonardo was in talks over a move to Italy during the summer but Santos blocked the transfer at the time.
It is explained that while neither Spurs nor the Magpies have made ‘concrete’ moves for the striker, they are watching closely ahead of the January transfer window.
Leonardo is also said to be the radars of Moncao and Roma, with Santos thought to value him at €20m- €25m (£17.3m-£21.7m).
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham showed with their acquisition of Alejo Veliz that they are keeping a close eye on the best-emerging talent from South America and are prepared to take a punt on some starlets.
If anything, Leonardo looks much closer to a finished product than Veliz, which is why a move from Spurs is certainly on the cards.
