This beautiful nightscape photo was captured in Villarrica National Park of southern Chile, some 6 miles (10 km) from the city of Pucón. The erupting volcano is called Villarrica but is locally referred to as Pillán, or house of the pillán (spirit).

Villarrica is a nearly perfectly shaped stratovolcano standing 9,668 feet (2,947 m) above sea level. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in South America. In fact, just a few weeks ago, strombolian activity and crater incandescence was noted on webcam images. Photo taken on December 17, 2022.
