Off-duty LAPD officer, passenger killed in Northridge crash, 3 others injured
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer and his front-seat passenger were killed in a crash in Northridge early Saturday morning, authorities said.
Police said a second driver, a 20-year-old man, was suspected of driving under the influence and traveling more than 100 mph in his 4-door BMW when he crashed into the officer’s white Infiniti. The driver also may have run either a stop sign or a red light, LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said.
The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, Police Chief Michel Moore said at a news conference.
Both the officer and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two-vehicle crash occurred just before 1:20 a.m. in the 18100 block of Roscoe Boulevard, east of Louise Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.
Firefighters arrived to find one car against a building, a sheared fire hydrant and three occupants in at least serious condition, Stewart said. The three injured were taken to hospitals.
Moore identified the officer as Darrell Cunningham Shamily, a five-year veteran of the force who worked out of the West Los Angeles Station. He is survived by a fiancee and two sons, ages 6 and 3.
Shamily’s passenger was not immediately identified.
One of the three injured was an off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy who was in Shamily’s car, Moore said.
The 20-year-old driver was hospitalized.
This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.
