Petrol bombs and fireworks thrown at police on street as riot squad called in
Violence has erupted in Edinburgh where youths attacked police with petrol bombs.
People had gathered for Bonfire Night when celebrations took a twisted turn and some began lighting fireworks in all directions.
Specialist officers were deployed to tackle ‘significant’ antisocial use of fireworks in Hay Avenue.
Police Scotland confirmed that Specialist Public Order resources were sent to the area as part of Operation Moonbeam, launched in response to the high levels of public disorder.
A statement on Twitter read: ‘Officers are being attacked with fireworks, petrol bombs and other projectiles.
‘Some local roads are closed. Please avoid the area for the time-being while we respond.’
