I’m homeless so live in a hostel with my newborn – it might be eight years before I get a council house but I’ll wait

A HOMELESS woman with a newborn baby has admitted it could be up to eight years until she gets a council house of her own.

Megan, who lives in a hostel with her newborn and partner, decided to answer a comment from a social media user which read: “The sad thing is just because you’re pregnant doesn’t automatically entitle you to a council place my lovely.

“You may be waiting a long time.”

In a clip shared to TikTok, Megan, who has since given birth, responds: “Obviously this person doesn’t know my situation and thinks they do, so they’re leaving these comments that are just very unnecessary.

“I’ve known people in hostels for 7/8 years – that’s very unfortunate and it depends on your council and on the availability of room places.

“I get that but I would rather be in a Travel lodge that’s clean and has no mould or anything that’s going to harm me or the baby than be in a mould infested room, which my room at home was.”

She goes on to say how she would clean the mould off monthly, but notes how it would just come back.

” I just feel like when you have a child to look after, you don’t think, ‘this could take years,’ she explains.

“I’m not going to just suffer in a mouldy room and expose my child to mould…kids die from black mould exposure, adults die from black mould exposure.

“So, if I have to wait seven or eight years, so be it.”

Megan explains that the council went to her parents’ house, saw the issues, saw that there was no space for her and the baby or her partner to live and decided this was the best option for now because she can’t afford to private rent.

“If we could afford to private rent, we would not be in this situation obviously,” she continues.

“I would rather private rent than be living in a hotel, but it’s impossible, we can’t afford to do that.”

In a second clip, Megan reveals what a day in her life typically looks like living in a hostel.

She begins the day with some washing – adding “the amount of washing a baby goes through is actually insane.”

“So I did some washing…oh, my God, the amount of washing that babies go through is absolutely insane,” she says.

“I went to the shop, and then I went back to put my stuff in the dryer.

“Then I had a chocolate muffin and chilled, and then I went back to get my washing.

“We’re on the top floor as well, so it’s very up and down.”

Megan explains how she then pumped and put milk in the bottle for her newborn, before tucking into dinner that her boyfriend has rustled up.

It wasn’t long before the post racked up over 116k views and several comments from social media users.

“Keep going strong girl I was in a hotel for months when I was pregnant still in temporary 3 years later it’ll happen one day,” reassured one.

A second penned: “I lived in a mouldy property for start of pregnancy and it made me feel really sick I got housed when I was 35 weeks.”

A third wrote:” Hold on tight it took me 7 1-2 years for a permanent.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “You’ve done the right thing for you & your baby!!”
