Four top documentary filmmakers will reveal secrets behind their projects when they join Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&A event with 2024 awards contenders. They will participate in two video discussions to premiere on Tuesday, November 14, at 4:00 p.m. PT; 7:00 p.m. ET. The Deepest Breath (Netflix)
Synopsis: A champion and expert safety diver seemed destined for one another. Despite different paths taken, they meet at the pinnacle of the free-diving world, experiencing the thrilling rewards and inescapable risks of chasing dreams through the depths of the ocean.
Bio: Laura McGann’s career has included “The End of the Counter,” “The 8th” and “Revolutions.”
Kokomo City (Magnolia)
Synopsis: A raw depiction of the lives of four black trans sex workers as they confront the dichotomy between the black community and themselves.
Bio: This marks the feature film directorial debut for D. Smith.
Little Richard: I Am Everything (Magnolia)
Synopsis: Little Richard is the one-of-a-kind rock’n’roll icon who shaped the world of music.
Bio: Lisa Cortes was an Emmy winner for “The Apollo.” Other projects have included “The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion,” “All In: The Fight for Democracy” and “The Space Race.”
The Mission (NatGeo)
Synopsis: 26-year-old American missionary John Chau was killed as he attempted to make contact with an Indigenous group off the coast of India, one of the last communities on the planet still living in isolation.
Bio: Amanda McBaine was an Emmy winner for “Boys State.” Other projects have included “The Investigators,” “The Bandit” and “Mayor Pete.”
