She was an American attorney and federal judge, beginning her career as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1974. Initially appointed to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, she later received an appointment to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit by President Bill Clinton in 1999. Barry played a role in supporting her colleague Samuel Alito's Supreme Court nomination in 2006.
