Hate crime investigation underway at CCSU after racial slur, swastika found in dorm bathroom
Police are investigating a hate crime at Central Connecticut State University after a racial slur and a swastika were found in the bathroom of a dorm building on Monday.
University officials said a student discovered that the N-word and a swastika were carved into the back of a bathroom stall door in the Seth North residence hall and reported it to authorities. The vandalism is believed to have occurred sometime Monday evening, according to a statement issued by CCSU president Zulma Toro.
“It saddens me to inform you that there has been a reported hate crime on our beautiful campus,” Toro wrote in a message to the university community.
“Central has zero tolerance for all forms of hate crimes,” she continued.
“These messages are offensive and impact all members of our community,” Toro wrote. “The untold emotional damage to the groups who have been targeted should not be ignored. I am asking all of you to join me in supporting our friends and colleagues who are impacted by this crime and to speak out against hate and intolerance.”
The CCSU Police Department is investigating the vandalism, which Toro said was “eradicated immediately.”
“In addition to the criminal investigation, any member of our campus community found to be responsible will be subject to disciplinary procedures for any violation of Central policies and regulations,” the university president wrote.
“The University will continue to take appropriate actions to ensure that Central remains a safe environment in which all campus community members are welcomed to learn and work.”
