As to the current crisis in Gaza it could have been resolved many years ago if a truly independent sovereign Palestinian state had been established by the UN adjacent to Israel based on the pre-1967 borders. That never happened and the current crisis in Gaza has its roots in that failure. Now Washington doesn't want to tie Israel's hands in its Gaza operation.
