Forget about ‘preventative Botox’ for anti-aging – I’m a dermatologist and it’s a joke, it can mean trouble by age 40
A DERMATOLOGIST has shared some warnings about using “preventative Botox” methods.
She said that it really doesn’t aid in anti-aging and can actually cause problems as you get older.
Self-described “skin nerd” and dermatologist Shereene Idriss (@shereeneidriss) shares helpful skincare tips online.
In a TikTok video, she broke down what exactly is preventative Botox, if you need it, and what you don’t need for your skin.
The 39-year-old said: “I’m here to tell you that preventative Botox is actually a joke.”
She explained that she refuses to give it to her patients who ask for it and are in their early and mid-20s.
“Botox should be started when you have built-in lines that do not disappear at rest. Lines that appear to form permanent deeper grooves on your face,” she advised.
That is when you should start considering “preventative Botox,” but it’s not necessarily preventing anything if the lines are already there.
“The other thing about preventative Botox that people often assume is that they need to do it immediately, once the movement comes back, and that is wrong on all counts,” she said.
According to the content creator, she prefers for movement to come back “slowly and naturally so that you do not lose the essence of your face by the time you hit 40.”
Lastly, she said Botox should be used as an “adjunct to your skincare routine” because “a solid skincare regimen is where prevention really starts.”
The skin professional added that people don’t need lasers or fillers of any sort before the first signs of aging have even fully kicked in.
“Targeting your problems with your skincare routine is gonna give your skin a better chance to age gracefully over time,” she detailed.
Viewers flooded the comments with appreciative words and praise for her transparency.
“Best doctor. I remember when you turned me down for Botox. Thank you for that,” one commented.
Another chimed in: “Thank you for this!!!! I’m 29 and I feel like I’m the only one my age who hasn’t done Botox yet and I’m feeling the pressure!”
“I’m 40 and have never had Botox but look younger than friends who have been having Botox since their 20s,” a TikTok user shared.
Others weren’t too ready to leave their old ways.
“I DON’T CARE. MY FINE LINES DISAPPEARED,” one boldly wrote.
Another added: “I’d rather not have built-in lines and get a little bit of Botox two times a year than have lines at rest and have to get more and spend more to smooth them out?”
