52 people displaced in Hartford apartment building fire

At least 52 people have been displaced from their homes following a fire in a Hartford apartment complex on Saturday, officials said.

The fire broke out in a multi-unit building at 34 Willard St. in the Asylum Hill neighborhood, forcing 37 adults and 15 children out of their homes, according to Hartford Fire Department  District Chief Mario Oquendo, Jr.

The department responded to the complex after receiving multiple calls reporting smoke and fire alarms in the area. Firefighters found fire running through the walls between the second and fourth floor and “through the pipe chase in the laundry room as well as fire through the roof,” Oquendo said.

The fire alarm system and some electrical components in the building were effected by the blaze, causing some units to be evacuated until those systems are repaired by the electric and alarm companies, Oquendo said.

No one was injured in the fire and The American Red Cross was assisting the displaced families, officials said.

The fire was under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
