CT woman in serious condition after deer comes flying through windshield of vehicle
A woman is in serious condition after a motorist struck a deer in Easton on Monday, sending the animal through the windshield of a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
The crash was reported at 9 a.m. on Route 59, in the area of Sherwood Drive, where police officers responded to the report of a serious motor vehicle crash, according to Richard Doyle, chief of police at the Easton Police Department.
Medics and members of the Easton Fire Department also responded to the scene, where the first officers discovered that a motorist in a 2019 Ford pickup truck had struck a deer, according to Doyle.
Officers also found a Honda Pilot off the road. The driver’s side of the Pilot was resting upright against a utility pole. Doyle said a woman was extricated from the vehicle and was taken in an ambulance in serious condition to Bridgeport Hospital.
The Fairfield Accident Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the crash and was assisted by the Westport Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team, Doyle said.
The preliminary investigation indicated the driver of the pickup truck was heading north on Rt. 59 when a large deer entered the road from the right side. The truck struck the deer, causing the animal to go airborne.
The collision sent the deer into the windshield of the Honda, which was heading south on Route 59, Doyle said. The animal traveled through the vehicle’s cabin and was thrown out of the rear window, settling into the southbound shoulder, according to Doyle.
The Honda continued south and came to rest in a grassy area on the southbound shoulder.
The road was closed for several hours because of the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
