Sports briefs: Southern Marin Broncos advance to Pop Warner Super Bowl
The Southern Marin Broncos 14U football team secured its passage into the Pop Warner National Championships Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla. following a 38-6 victory against the Reno-Sparks Miners in Pleasant Hill on Saturday night.
Both teams came into the Pacific Western Regional title game with unbeaten records but the Broncos prevailed to move to 11-0 on the season.
Standout players on the Broncos include Dayton Trammell, Ryan Vaughn, Jaylen Parker, Dominic Tarantino, Joey Carvalho, Rocco Stagg, Hawkes Packard, and Dylan Skrinar.
The program is currently fundraising to raise money to send the team to Orlando for the Pop Warner Super Bowl on the first weekend of December. More info can be found at https://www.southernmarinfootball.com/.
Girls basketball
Tam raced out to an 11-point lead en route to a 44-32 non-league win against Archie Williams on Saturday night. The Red-tailed Hawks (1-1) took a 12-1 lead in the first quarter and led 27-12 at the half.
Annabelle Freed led the Peregrine Falcons (1-1) with 12 points and added five rebounds. Gia Debok had eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The MCAL basketball season has been reduced to a single round robin this season, which is set to begin on on Jan. 5.
Prep cross country
The MCAL honored Redwood’s Ethan Werner and Archie Williams’ Annie Stieg as their selections for boys and girls runner of the year, respectively, the league announced on Saturday.
Werner and Steig were the respective individual winners at the MCAL championship race on Nov. 8 at College of Marin’s Indian Valley Campus.
The boys first team features Tam’s Max Dunmire and Lucas Ruark, Branson’s Jasper James, Novato’s Nick McAuley, Archie Williams’ Ian Sharp and Jackson McFerron, plus Redwood’s Justin Shern, Gabriel Cavanagh, and Gunnar Niemi.
The selections for the girls team were Branson’s Hailey Sellers, Marin Catholic’s Audrey Carr and Gabby Hays, Redwood’s Erin Stolte, Marley Nacco and Kate Kozubik, Tam’s Ellery Barnes and Jane Song, plus Archie Williams’ Alyssa Silverstein.
