In 2013, Pistorius fatally shot his 29-year-old girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, while she was in the bathroom. Throughout the trial, the Paralympic athlete asserted that he had mistakenly shot Steenkamp, believing her to be an intruder. Pistorius discharged four shots through a locked door, striking Steenkamp in the head, hip, and arm. He argued in court that he only realized the identity of the person he had shot when he broke down the bathroom door with a cricket bat.
