The former US police officer who murdered George Floyd has been stabbed in prison.

Minneapolis-based cop Derek Chauvin was pictured kneeling on the black suspect’s neck in May 2020 and was later convicted for causing his death.

Mr Floyd’s death ignited the ‘black lives matter’ movement after the white police officer was shown using the brutal tactics during an arrest in May 2020.

Harrowing footage showed Chauvin putting his knee on Mr Floyd’s throat as he lay on the ground at the back of a squad car.

He had been arrested for trying to use a suspected counterfeit note at a store.

Chauvin was found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second degree manslaughter in April 2021.

He also later admitted breaching Mr Floyd’s civil rights.

According to AP, Chauvin was stabbed while serving his 22-year sentence at the federal correctional institution in Tuscon, Arizona.

The news agency reported that he needed ‘lifesaving measures’ following the attack.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate had been injured at the prison around 12.30pm on Friday.

The incident was said to have been contained and that the inmate was taken to hospital.

The prison is reported to have been at the centre of numerous security lapses recently.

Chauvin’s lawyer had previously expressed concerns that his client was a target for other inmates.

It is understood he was largely kept in solitary confinement to minimise the risk to his life.

The incident comes following Chauvin’s recent appeal over the murder conviction which was rejected.

Visiting has been suspended at the 380 inmate jail in the wake of the stabbing, according to MailOnline.

Mr Floyd’s death sparked worldwide anti-racism and police brutality protests.
