Mile Jedinak reveals what was said in Spurs dressing room after Chelsea defeat
Mile Jedinak has revealed that Ange Postecoglou told his players after the loss against Chelsea to not lose sight of what they are trying to do.
Postecoglou has repeatedly insisted since taking over at Tottenham that the attacking style of football is a non-negotiable for him irrespective of the state of the game or other circumstances.
The Australian demonstrated during the London derby earlier this month that those were not just empty words, doing something that many found quite inexplicable at the time.
He asked his team to continue playing an extremely high defensive line and to continue pressing their opponents up the pitch even though Tottenham were reduced to nine men after Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie’s red cards.
Jamie Carragher admitted that he had never seen something like that before and praised the Spurs boss for his bravery (Sky Sports).
In the end, the tactics did not quite work, with Chelsea scoring a couple of late goals to emerge 4-1 winners on the night.
Postecoglou wants his Spurs squad to stay focused
When asked what was said to the players in the dressing room after the final whistle, Jedinak has now told The Optus Football Podcast: “Do I remember it all? It must have been probably how they went about it, particularly after going against that adversity.
“I think, for me from memory, there would have been something in there about discipline and not allowing ourselves to lose sight of what we’re trying to do.
“And again it’s very much, it only takes a split second and that’s what happened, it was a couple of incidents in the game where we didn’t get the rub of the green and we ended up making decisions that ended up costing us from a team’s perspective.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If any of the players doubted if Postecoglou’s insistence on attacking football was just lip service, they would have learned that evening that the Australian means everything he says.
While one can argue that we might have come away with a point had we shut shop and defended with all nine men behind the ball, the value of Postecoglou reiterating the message of ‘attack under all circumstances’ will arguably translate into more points for the side over the course of the season.
