The GOP’s best hope is Nikki Haley, not Trump | Letters to the editor
The nation’s news media clearly favors a rematch of Biden vs. Trump in 2024 — because it sells.
Trump, we’re told, has an insurmountable lead over the other Republican candidates. In a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, Trump beats Biden in five of six critical swing states.
What was not the headline, and one wonders why not, is that Nikki Haley beats Biden in all six states in the same poll, and leads by a wider margin than Trump in four of the six.
In Arizona, Haley is up by 7 points over Biden, with Trump up by 5. In Michigan, Haley has a 10-point edge compared to Trump’s 5. Haley takes Pennsylvania by 10 points, Trump by 4. Polling, as we know, is not science. When people vote, they don’t always do what they told pollsters.
Simply put, Haley would be a stronger Republican candidate than Trump. The overwhelming majority does not want four more years of Trump, and most people also don’t want another four years of Biden. Haley would beat Joe Biden, which would be an improvement.

Stay here and fight
The letter from John Allen and Keith Hyatte of Branford, Conn., dissuading people from moving to Florida or vacationing here due to the toxic atmosphere perpetrated by Ron DeSantis and his underlings plays right into DeSantis’ hands.
Many people have moved here who are in love with DeSantis and we Democrats are getting outnumbered by the MAGA folks. So step up to the plate, move down here and help us put an end to DeSantis’ reign of terror.

Snubbing Schnellenberger
Congratulations to the University of Louisville Cardinals for defeating the Miami Hurricanes 38-31 in the inaugural “Howard Schnellenberger Bowl,” named for the legendary dynasty-building super coach who revived both programs (he died in 2021, and coached at Florida Atlantic University, too).
What boils my blood, and that of all knowledgeable football fans who know the impact Schnellenberger had on college football is that the National Football Foundation, which oversees the College Football Hall of Fame, continues to deny his candidacy because of an arbitrary .600 lifetime winning percentage that keeps him off the ballot.
If he were on that ballot, he’d certainly get 100% of the vote.
To add insult to injury, the NFF has repeatedly inducted far less consequential coaches to the college Hall of Fame, which 99% of fans have never heard of. This is a direct insult against not only Schnellenberger, but all knowledgeable fans who rightly see him belonging on the Mount Rushmore of college football coaches. It’s also an insult to the coaches who have stood up for Schnelenberger: Bill Belichick, Don Shula and Nick Saban, to name a few.
After the game, Louisville Coach Jeff Brohm paid tribute to his mentor and former coach by saying that Schnellenberger “never backed down from a challenge.” Isn’t that the true measure of a man, how when he is confronted with an awesome challenge, instead of shying away, goes to work and overcomes the challenge?
In what twisted world does a governing body like the NFF penalize a coach for having the guts to take on programs most other coaches wouldn’t go near with a ten foot pole and turns them into national powerhouses?
>
This is the greatest Hall of Fame snub in history and it should outrage all football fans. Schnellenberger isn’t just a unique figure in football history — he’s a unicorn in which he could make a claim to the prestigious title of “MVP of the Hall of Fame.”

Editor’s Note: Sun Sentinel sports columnist Dave Hyde made a compelling case for Schnellenberger’s admission in a 2015 column that mentions this letter writer, Mr. Dunn. But the arbitrary rule persists, and the late coach is not in the Hall.
