Young Dems help expectant mothers
The Young Democrats have set a goal to assist as many young pregnant women in their community through the donation of hampers and maternity care essentials.
Diapers, baby clothes, wipes, formula and other maternity essentials were presented in gift baskets to three soon-to-be mothers at the Democratic Labour Party headquarters in George Street, St Michael, recently.
The community give-back initiative began when chairperson of the Young Democrats, Tyra Trotman, was contacted on behalf of the trio for assistance. In her search for resources and donations, she became aware of the high cost of essential items.
“[As] I don’t have children of my own, when I went to purchase some of these items I was shocked at the [prices]. So I can understand how persons out there are struggling, especially persons who have two and three children and then still expecting another one.
“Oftentimes young expectant mothers, single mothers are overlooked and as part of the vulnerable class in society we have to respect them, and we have to protect them,” said Trotman.
The Professional Nanny Care & Services business, Prestigious Care, and Elite Polished Events assisted in compiling the hampers.
To help hundreds, which is the aim of the Young Democrats, Trotman and her team are asking for help from the private sector in sourcing more items for donation. Potential donors can contact headquarters with their offers.
“I think the private sector and just the community as a whole need to come together to help persons who are in need. This can be the start – if you want to call it the Maternity Drive – where persons come and donate things. (JRN)
