Ange Postecoglou admitted that Tottenham’s current injury situation is quite horrendous but insisted that his side will come through this difficult spell as long as they keep playing like they did against Aston Villa.
Along with the long-term injury absentees, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic, Postecoglou was also without Pape Matar Sarr against Villa after the Senegal international picked up an injury during the international break.
Additionally, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero were suspended for the clash, and to make matters worse, Rodrigo Bentancur, who made his first start for Spurs since February, was forced off with an ankle problem on 32 minutes after being on the receiving end of a nasty challenge from Matty Cash.
Despite being without so many of their key players, Tottenham were the better side for much of the encounter and could have emerged comfortable winners if they had been more clinical in the final third.
Postecoglou is confident Spurs will improve
When asked after the 2-1 loss if his decision to name two goalkeepers on the bench was an insight into how bad the situation is at Spurs, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah, that’s a pretty good summation. We have got eight (injuries), Bentancur nine, we had a couple of suspensions today and we’ve only got a squad of 25.
“You do the sums and that’s what we’ve got. We lost Ashley Phillips during the week as well. It is just the situation we’re in at the moment, but we’ll get through it.
“It might take a little while, but we’ll get through it and as long as we show the same intent and play the football we did today, I’ve got no doubt when we come out the other side, we’ll be a very good football team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even though we fell to our third straight defeat, I was extremely encouraged by our performance yesterday. We are going through an unprecedented injury crisis and yet, our display was not far off our best of the season.
That suggests that our squad is not as weak as some perhaps think, with the likes of Lo Celso and Ben Davies stepping up and proving that they can be counted upon.
