UNICEF warns about the rise in Child Malnutrition cases in Afghanistan

0

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that in October 2023, they identified 838,637 children suffering from malnutrition in Afghanistan.

This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and intervention in the country to address the critical issue of children’s malnutrition.

On Tuesday, the organization issued a warning about the rising number of children suffering from malnutrition in Afghanistan by releasing its monthly report.

UNICEF has emphasized that the severe malnutrition rate among children under five years old has decreased by 29%, and the number of individuals in treatment has decreased by 18% compared to the previous month.

According to the organization, seasonal changes and improved child nutrition practices have reduced diarrhoea cases among children.

UNICEF’s report reveals that nearly 50,000 children between 6 months and 5 years have received treatment at health centres supported by the organization.

This comes as many international organizations have warned of an increase in child malnutrition in Afghanistan due to rising poverty.

Previously, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 3.2 million children in Afghanistan are suffering from malnutrition.
