Quarterback Jacurri Brown expected to play in Hurricanes’ bowl game
The Hurricanes will have a scholarship quarterback for their bowl game next month.
Sophomore Jacurri Brown, who has been subject to transfer rumors, will play in the bowl game, a source told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Wednesday. Brown has not played this season.
“His time is coming,” Cristobal said after Miami’s win over Boston College. “He’s a good football player. … He’s a good football player, and he’s going to be playing.”
Miami was in need of a quarterback for its postseason game after veteran starter Tyler Van Dyke announced he was transferring on Monday. The Hurricanes’ youngest scholarship quarterback, Emory Williams, is out with a left arm injury.
UM coaches said the plan for Brown was to redshirt this year, and he will still be eligible for the redshirt after playing in the bowl game. Players can participate in up to four games and redshirt, so Brown will be classified as a redshirt sophomore next season.
Although Brown has seniority, Williams edged him out for the backup role this year. When Van Dyke missed time due to injury, UM started Williams against Clemson. When the Hurricanes opted to bench Van Dyke for the FSU game, Williams got the start again.
Brown played in eight games as a freshman in 2022, completing 60 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for 223 yards. Brown’s speed brings a different aspect to UM’s offense, but he has been working on his passing from the pocket this year.
“He’s one of the fastest kids on the team,” Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said in September. “I think everybody sees that. What he’s done good since I’ve been here is he’s developed the pocket stuff that we’ve been working on.”
The Hurricanes will learn which bowl game they will play in on Sunday.
