Report: Postecoglou was expected to give 18-year-old a chance before latest injury
90 min have claimed that Ashley Phillips was expected to be handed an opportunity by Ange Postecoglou before picking up an injury during last week’s international break.
Postecoglou is dealing with a whole host of injuries and suspensions at the moment. Among the players currently missing are both of his starting centre-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, with the former suspended and the latter out until January with a hamstring problem.
To many people’s surprise, the Australian decided to leave his only other senior centre-back, Eric Dier, on the bench against Aston Villa, starting Emerson Royal alongside Ben Davies instead.
Ahead of the clash against the Villans, Spurs were hit with the news that Phillips picked up an injury during England Under-19’s clash against Mexico, with Postecoglou confirming that the 18-year-old is expected to be out for ‘a little while’ (Spurs Play).
Plans wrecked for Ashley Phillips at Tottenham
90 min have now claimed that Phillips has impressed Postecoglou and the rest of the coaching staff since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in the summer.
In fact, it is asserted that the teenager was expected to be ‘given a chance to prove his worth’ over the coming weeks, given Tottenham’s injury crisis.
However, Postecoglou’s plans were allegedly wrecked when he found out that the young defender had also succumbed to an injury.
Spurs Web Opinion
It is quite possible that Ange was planning to start Phillips alongside Davies but had to change his plans at the last moment when he heard of the 18-year-old’s injury.
It will be interesting to see whether Alfie Dorrington gets an opportunity as he has arguably been even better than Phillips for the Under-21s so far this season.
