Cher seems to have a renaissance at least once a decade, as her current Christmas album is proving. Her longevity and success in Hollywood are impressive and she’s reached icon status, but if you ask the 77-year-old performer about her staying power, she isn’t exactly excited about it.
On Tuesday’s Today Show, Cher had some surprising comments about her 1998 comeback single “Believe” celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “Pisses me — it pisses the f— out of me. And you can’t put that out,” she joked. She loves the song, but she doesn’t love that almost three decades have passed since she released it.
“So you and age, you’re not friends?” asked interviewer Harry Smith.
“No. My mother didn’t mind. But I do. I hate it,” she quipped.
And while Smith admitted he hated turning 70, Cher had a quick comeback. “I’d give anything to be 70 again,” she said.
Even though many women in the entertainment industry are embracing the aging process, it’s also refreshing to hear someone as accomplished as Cher reveal that it’s not her favorite thing in the world. It’s an honest and raw look at the mixed emotions that come with each season of life — it’s a wiser time, but it also makes you wistful for the days that are behind you.
But don’t worry, Cher has plenty of living still to do, including an upcoming memoir that will tackle her colorful career. “It’s very difficult because I’ve lived too long, and I’ve done too many things,” she concluded. “And so it would have to be, like, an encyclopedia, truthfully.” We can’t wait to read it!
