Onana 1/10, Fernandes 8/10: Manchester United player ratings vs Galatasaray
Manchester United and Galatasaray played out a six-goal thriller in Turkey on Wednesday evening in the Champions League group stage.
Erik ten Hag was left bemoaning Man United’s failure to defend as they surrendered a two-goal lead twice.
Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes silenced a fiery home crowd after putting the Red Devils 2-0 up early.
Former Chelsea man Hakim Ziyech pulled one back for Galatasaray, courtesy of Andre Onana’s error.
Scott McTominay’s fine left-footed finish gave the visitors another two-goal lead.
Onana made a second inexplicable error to pile misery on Man United, again from Ziyech’s free-kick.
Kerem Akturkoglu brought the score to parity in the 71st minute, leaving Man United on the brink of Champions League elimination.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 1/10
The Cameroon international made two horrendous errors, failing to stop two direct free-kicks from Hakim Ziyech. His positioning for the third goal was questionable, to say the least.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10
The right-back kept Wilfried Zaha quiet even though he earned a yellow card for a mistimed sliding tackle. He picked McTominay with perfection for United’s third goal.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
Maguire made a key block on the goal-line and did not allow Icardi to enter the game.
Victor Lindelof – 5/10
The 29-year-old was sloppy at times and got bailed out by Maguire. It is strange how Ten Hag keeps picking him over Raphael Varane.
Luke Shaw – 6/10
Shaw displayed how important he is to the Man United team. The full-back played a crucial role in Fernandes’ wonder strike.
Sofyan Amrabat – 5/10
Amrabat was bypassed too easily, but that was because United had no structure in their midfield. The referee harshly booked him, forcing Ten Hag to hook him off before the hour mark.
Scott McTominay – 6/10
McTominay was among the most involved United players in the opposition’s box.
The midfielder did well to score from an acute angle but missed two great chances at the later stage of the game.
Having him at the number eight position comes at a cost, as he tends to forget his defensive responsibilities.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10
Fernandes played a well-timed assist for Garnacho before scoring a fantastic long-range goal. However, he naively conceded the foul from which Galatasaray bagged their first goal.
Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10
The Argentine scored another early goal for his side. He worked hard but looked too tired as the game went on.
Antony – 7/10
The trickster played his best game of the season but faded off in the second half.
Rasmus Hojlund – 6/10
The striker showed good hold-up play for United’s opening goal. It seems Ten Hag took him off too early in the game.
Substitutes
Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10
The youngster tried to bring some calmness in midfield and coped well in a hostile environment. He must start against Newcastle United on Saturday.
Anthony Martial – 3/10
A fine performance against Everton was his lucky day, as he disappointed massively after coming on for Hojlund. His most vital contribution was a tackle at the base of the midfield.
Facundo Pellistri – 5/10
The youngster should have won it in the end but failed to keep his nerves in front of the goal.
Diogo Dalot – 5/10
The Portuguese international was beaten by Zaha twice in two minutes.
